The Perfect Father's Day Gift
My church recognizes Mother's Day by giving flowers to all the Moms. It's not much, but it's a nice gesture to recognize mothers and to remind them that God loves them. And the flowers are given out by children, which seems to melt the Moms' hearts.
A few years after we started this practice, someone suggested we should do something for fathers as well, and so we began giving out small packages of Dad's oatmeal cookies on Father's Day. (The preschool department usually sends children home with a small craft made from glue, glitter and toothpicks as well.)
I hope I don't sound ungrateful when I ask, Is That It?
It could be worse, I know. When I was growing up, the traditional gift for Father's Day was a necktie or a bottle of Old Spice cologne. Now that I am a father, I know that these gifts are not what I want or need.
What is the perfect gift for Father's Day?
Here, briefly, is my wish list:
- a car that never needs costly repairs
- a toilet that never clogs or runs after flushing
- beautiful, thick grass that grows to a consistent height then stops
- garbage that takes itself to the curb
- cell phone bills that make sense
- a machine that turns credit card debt into clean drinking water
I would also like a bit more time in the bathtub.
I know that's not very realistic. Here are some practical Father's Day gift ideas:
When I come in the door after work, let me get my shoes off before you tell me about anything that needs repair or costs money.
When you get out of the car, please take your used tissues and gum wrappers with you.
Be nice to your brother and sister.
Respect your Mom and listen to her more than you do.
Leave the thermostat alone.
If you want me to fix the computer, ask when you have homework, not when you want to chat with your friends.
Don't offer me fashion tips. That mismatched shirt and shorts combo is very comfortable, thank you very much
Remember how much I like steak and potatoes and apple pie and ginger cookies. Hint hint.
Jokes aside, Father's Day, for me, is a time to be deeply thankful. I have been blessed with good health, a godly, beautiful wife, and four great children. I have a job that provides work that is meaningful and satisfying, and enough material possessions that I have some to spare.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go call my Dad.
